My parents have always chosen the best of everything for themselves and when they bought their new dog, they only chose the best gourmet dog food. Because the food had a great name and was expensive, they naturally assumed that it would be the best for their dog. They thought it would contain the best ingredients, be the safest, and provide the absolutely best nutrition for their pet.

But, in reality, gourmet dog food is no better than the cheap brands you buy on the grocery shelves. They may be made with slightly different ingredients, or they may claim to be made from ingredients that are more naturally grown or raised, but they contain the same preservatives and chemicals that most of the other brands do. In addition, they are missing some of the very important nutrition that your animal needs.

No gourmet dog food on the market today actually does contain all the nutritional value that a dog needs to remain healthy and have a long life. The labels may say that they do, but commercially-produced dog food is lacking in key nutrients, and because of that, they lead to cancer and early death in far too many animals these days.

When we are trying to eat healthy for ourselves, we tend to lean toward natural health foods. To humans, natural means healthier and we assume that the same is would be true for natural dog foods. But, many of these foods are not healthier than regular, brand name pet foods, and when you are paying more for natural dog foods, don’t you think you deserve to know the truth?

When something says natural, it usually means organic, or that the products have not been overly-processed. The term “natural” is defined in law and means something different, though, when it is applied to pet food. Virtually any pet food company can say that they are producing natural dog foods without fear of reprisal. But, some of the additives that are put in the food, to retain freshness and increase tastefulness are actually terribly bad for your pet.

Whenever you buy your dog food, take a good look at the label and if you don’t get enough information from that, do your research online to see what is exactly going into your pet’s food. You may be surprised at some of the ingredients you have been feeding your pet for years – ingredients that you certainly wouldn’t want in your food!

When you go to visit your local veterinarian, you assume that they know best about what to feed a dog, and although he food is usually quite expensive there, you might be tempted to listen to their advice and buy their recommended dog food. The natural products and high-end name brands that they offer are well-known and well-respected, but are they really the best for your dog?

Even the most recommended dog food currently in production is not really good enough for your dog. The expensive products that your vet sells to you are probably higher in quality than some of the generic brands available on your store shelves, but that certainly does not mean that they are all you need to keep your pet healthy and happy and living a long life.

Most veterinarian recommended dog food is made from the same ingredients as those foods found in the grocery store, although there may be some variation in the core ingredients. But, in general, they contain the same additives and preservatives, products that cause illness and even cancer in animals. So, although your vet may really believe he is suggesting the best food on the market, it may be killing your dog.
